Geotab, a global leader in connected transportation solutions, has joined forces with behavior change experts Vitality to launch a data-driven joint venture aimed at improving commercial fleet performance. The collaboration combines telematics data with behavioral science to enhance driver safety, reduce risk, and support road safety.

How incentivized driver programs improve safety and reduce costs

The partnership introduces a behavior change platform that rewards drivers for safer habits. Vitality's experience in behavioral incentives, demonstrated by its Vitality Drive insurance program—which has led to 55% fewer claims and significantly lower road fatalities—will be integrated with Geotab’s extensive telematics network of over 4.7 million vehicles and AI-powered predictive collision analytics.

The initial offering from the joint venture provides fleets with a comprehensive toolset to promote positive driving habits through incentives and rewards. By leveraging behavioral science, the platform aims to create lasting improvements in driver performance, reduce accident-related expenses, and mitigate fleet risks. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motor vehicle crashes cost U.S. society $340 billion annually, with human behavior being a primary factor in 60% of collisions.

The future of fleet safety: AI-driven insights and rewards programs

The joint solution offers data-driven insights, personalized coaching, and a rewards mechanism to encourage safer driving. Additionally, it seeks to improve driver well-being, which is expected to aid retention and recruitment efforts.

Sabina Martin, Vice President of Product Management at Geotab, emphasized the importance of addressing the human aspect of fleet management. “Drivers face increasing pressures on the road. This solution blends empathy and innovation to enhance safety and the overall driving experience,” she said.

Francois Theron, Deputy CEO of Vitality Drive International, highlighted the venture’s broader societal impact. “By using technology to improve driver behavior, we can create safer roads, lower costs for businesses, and support a more responsible driving culture.”

The first product, Geotab Vitality, integrates AI-driven collision risk analytics with behavioral science to provide drivers with status rankings, personalized weekly goals, and incentives through a rewards system. The model shifts away from penalizing poor driving habits, instead encouraging continuous improvement through positive reinforcement.

Initial trials have demonstrated promising results, with early adopters reporting improved driver safety scores. Rewards earned through the program can be redeemed for products from major brands. Later this year, Geotab plans to integrate Geotab Vitality into its existing safety solutions, including Geotab Drive and the Geotab Safety Center, for a comprehensive fleet safety approach.

“This is just the beginning,” Martin noted. “By combining Geotab’s technology with Vitality’s expertise, we aim to lead the industry in data-driven coaching strategies that improve driver behavior and overall fleet efficiency.”
