As climate-related disasters become more frequent, many homeowners remain unaware of the risks their properties face. A study by the French Association for the Prevention of Natural and Technological Disasters (AFPCNT) revealed that 45% of French citizens do not know the specific climate threats to their homes. To address this issue, MAIF, a French mutual insurance company, has launched "Aux Alentours", a free, intuitive tool designed to educate and empower citizens in protecting their properties.
Raising awareness and encouraging action
"Aux Alentours" provides users with localized risk assessments, leveraging open data sources such as Georisques and Datagouv alongside MAIF's proprietary data. By simply entering their address, users can access detailed insights into potential natural hazards—including floods, droughts, and landslides—near their homes. The platform also offers information on nearby services such as schools, businesses, cultural centers, and real estate trends, making it a valuable resource for prospective homebuyers.
To further enhance user engagement, "Aux Alentours" features interactive quizzes that test knowledge on disaster preparedness and provide practical prevention tips. According to Romain Liberge, MAIF's Director of Marketing and Design, the initiative marks a shift towards proactive risk management: “We are evolving from a traditional insurer to a preventive insurer, equipping homeowners with the tools they need to anticipate and mitigate risks.”
Strengthening resilience against flooding
Since its launch in 2022, "Aux Alentours" has expanded to include a flood risk assessment service in collaboration with Mayane, a leading expert in climate adaptation. MAIF members residing in high-risk flood zones can determine their eligibility for the French government’s Fonds Barnier program, which provides financial assistance for home protection measures. Eligible homeowners receive a vulnerability assessment conducted by Mayane engineers, helping them identify structural weaknesses and potential protective solutions.
For those who do not qualify for government aid, MAIF offers an alternative: a free flood diagnostic through its ecological dividend program. To be eligible, homeowners must meet specific criteria, including ownership of the property, flood risk exposure, and a MAIF home insurance policy of at least five years.
A call to action in the face of climate change
Experts emphasize the urgency of addressing climate risks. Emma Haziza, Director of Mayane, warns that urbanization in flood-prone areas, combined with climate change, has intensified disaster threats. “The rising frequency and severity of climate events highlight the need for immediate action. We have the knowledge and tools to help homeowners implement protective measures. Now is the time to act,” she stresses.
With "Aux Alentours," MAIF takes a significant step forward in risk prevention, equipping its members with the resources needed to better understand and mitigate climate-related threats. As extreme weather events become increasingly common, initiatives like this are essential to fostering resilience and protecting communities.
