In a groundbreaking initiative for visually impaired customers, La Banque Postale has introduced a pilot program to test a voice-enabled banking card. Launched in honor of National Day for the Blind and Visually Impaired on October 4, the card aims to simplify purchases and increase accessibility for individuals with visual impairments. Initially, the trial will involve visually impaired employees of La Banque Postale, with plans to expand access based on feedback.

Enhancing accessibility for millions

Nearly two million people in France experience some form of visual impairment, including blindness and reduced visual acuity, which often complicates routine transactions and increases the risk of errors or fraud during payments. According to a study by HandSome and Ethik Connection, almost 90% of visually impaired individuals report encountering mistakes or fraud at checkout. Recognizing this challenge, La Banque Postale’s new card provides a safer, more intuitive payment experience.

How the voice-enabled card works

Developed in collaboration with CB, fintech company HandSome, and global security leader Thales, the VoiceCard leverages innovative technology to meet the needs of the visually impaired. Equipped with Bluetooth and a distinctive round notch for easy identification, the card allows users to check transaction details on their smartphones. Paired with the HandSome mobile app, the card audibly communicates transaction steps, enabling users to confirm the payment amount before entering their PIN. This feature empowers users with greater independence and security in their transactions.

Commitment to inclusion and innovation

La Banque Postale has long championed accessibility, providing Braille statements and accessible banking applications since 2016. The bank also supports deaf and hearing-impaired clients with video chat options and video-assisted customer service in French Sign Language since 2017. This latest endeavor with the voice-enabled card aligns with La Banque Postale’s ongoing dedication to financial inclusion, offering tools that empower users across a broad range of abilities.

In collaboration with Thales and HandSome, La Banque Postale continues to redefine banking for the visually impaired. As Vincent Menvielle, Head of Retail Banking Marketing, explains, “Through this pilot, we aim to improve accessibility to banking tools and secure transactions for all.”
