Chubb won silver in the Connected Ecosystems & Marketplaces category at the Qorus Innovation in Insurance Awards 2024 for its bespoke e-commerce digital insurance (read the full case study). Camila Serna, EVP, Global Head of Digital Acceleration at Chubb, tells us more about the project and the win.

Can you introduce yourself and tell us more about your role at Chubb?

I’m Camila Serna, Executive Vice President, Global Head of Digital Acceleration at Chubb.

I’m based in New York City and responsible for growing Chubb’s global digital business model through B2B2C distribution partnerships, in which Chubb sells its insurance products to our partners’ customers through their apps and websites.

These partnerships are enabled through Chubb’s integration tech platform, Chubb Studio, which is regularly updated with new features and capabilities based on our partners’ needs.

What made you most proud of the bespoke e-commerce digital insurance? What was your greatest achievement in making it happen?

Chubb’s culture of collaboration and focus on scalability and results is a great source of pride.

Our journey toward building insurance solutions for connected ecosystems and marketplaces is an ongoing one. We will continue to push boundaries and embrace technology while we utilize design thinking alongside our distribution partners to best serve their consumer base.

Our team at Chubb has a pioneering spirit that is truly inspiring. We work side-by-side with our affinity partners to drive digitalization and foster innovative insurance solutions integrated into other purchase transactions. It’s an approach that has yielded remarkable results.

What is the most important thing you would tell someone considering embarking on a similar project?

It’s critically important to understand the specific needs and pain points you are trying to solve for your partners or customers, as well as customer experience expectations. For Chubb, it’s not an off-the-shelf approach.

We use an agile methodology and have a portfolio of flexible products that can be combined and customized to meet the insurance protection needs for the customers of every company we partner with.

We embrace an ethos of R&D, speed, ambition and impatient execution. And share our experience and learnings from every product and partnership launched with our colleagues around the world, so that partners can benefit from best practices from other regions, and we bring the depth of our global expertise to bear.

What's coming next for the bespoke e-commerce digital insurance project?

We will continue to co-create new products with our e-commerce partners, discovering new ways to offer insurance protection and help to build financial resilience for consumers and businesses, protecting more valuable goods or creating new offerings for consumers’ peace of mind.

Additionally, we look forward to scaling our global network of e-commerce B2B2C partnerships, beyond the largest players in Asia and Latin America, launching innovative products with new and existing partners.

What would you say to companies that might consider entering the 2025 Insurance Innovation Awards?

Winning an innovation award not only signifies recognition but also reaffirms that we are moving in the right direction. It is truly an honor to be acknowledged among the most forward-thinking brands, as it validates the strides we have made in the digital insurance market.

What does this award mean to you and your innovation team?

This award serves as a testament to our commitment to innovation and showcases our ongoing progress and advancements. We take great pride in finding ways to make insurance protection more accessible, and this recognition inspires us to continue on our journey, together with our amazing business partners.
