Key findings

55% of French consumers report using virtual cards, with 37% using them regularly or daily.

Among Gen Z (18–24-year-olds), 75% utilize virtual cards, with nearly one-third using them daily.

Virtual cards are praised for their practicality, security, flexibility, and organizational benefits, particularly as digital payment methods have gained momentum since the pandemic. Features like the increased contactless payment limit (€50 since May 2020) and widespread merchant acceptance have contributed to their growth.

Benefits of virtual cards

Nearly half (45%) of respondents identified key advantages of virtual cards:

Practicality (23%): Eliminating the need for physical cards ensures constant access and hassle-free management.

Security (22%): Virtual cards offer enhanced fraud protection by removing the risks associated with physical cards.

Flexibility and Organization (15%): Users appreciate the ability to allocate spending across multiple virtual cards while maintaining clear transaction records.

Challenges and preferences

Despite the rising popularity of virtual cards, 17% of French consumers still prefer physical cards, citing habits and the perceived importance of their design and attributes. This sentiment is stronger among older generations, with 21% of those over 55 expressing a preference for physical cards, and 47% feeling more confident using them.

BforBank's BforZen Launch

To celebrate its new BforZen gold card, which combines physical and virtual functionalities with perks like free international payments and travel insurance, BforBank is hosting an online contest. Participants can win a smartphone case inspired by the card’s sleek gold design, blending practicality with style.
