United Overseas Bank (UOB) is taking a significant step towards employee development with the launch of its Better U Pivot programme. This comprehensive 12-month initiative, which includes customized learning paths and coaching, is aimed at helping employees transition into new roles within the bank. Announced during UOB's annual employee festival, Better U, this program is a key part of the bank’s commitment to supporting its workforce amid rapid changes in the financial sector.

Empowering employees through upskilling and reskilling initiatives

As part of its efforts to upskill and reskill employees, UOB also introduced the Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics Centre of Excellence (AIDA CoE). This collaboration with the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) and the National University of Singapore (NUS) aims to cultivate AIDA professionals specifically for the finance sector. UOB's Head of Group Human Resources, Dean Tong, emphasized that these initiatives are designed to nurture a growth mindset and essential soft skills among employees, ensuring they remain competitive and relevant in the job market.

Addressing employee concerns about career relevance

UOB's ASEAN Consumer Sentiment Study 2024 revealed that over 90% of Singaporean workers view reskilling as a primary concern. Acknowledging this, the bank aims to provide robust training programs to help employees pursue their professional goals. The Better U Pivot programme was officially launched with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) involving UOB, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, NUS, and other key partners.

Building expertise in AI and data analytics

The financial sector is rapidly evolving due to advancements in technology, making it imperative to develop expertise in areas like AI and data analytics. The AIDA CoE seeks to attract 100 university graduates over the next three years, providing them with hands-on experience and mentorship. Participants will engage in business-driven AIDA projects while gaining specialized training across various banking disciplines. This comprehensive approach ensures that UOB is not only investing in its employees but also positioning itself as a leader in the industry's job transformation.
