AIB has announced plans to invest €40 million in revamping its branch network across Ireland by the end of next year, according to RTE.ie. The investment will focus on upgrading branches and ATMs as part of the bank’s commitment to maintaining physical locations while also reducing its carbon footprint.
AIB’s branch network upgrade: 35 locations in phase one
As the largest branch network in Ireland, AIB employs 10,000 people nationwide. The first phase of the upgrade, scheduled to be completed by the end of 2025, will see 35 branches refurbished in key locations. The second phase will focus on an additional 26 branches.
Supporting the National Payments Strategy and Reducing Carbon Emissions
This investment supports the goals of the Irish Government's National Payments Strategy and aims to reduce AIB's operational carbon emissions by 10%. AIB’s efforts toward sustainability are further enhanced by its use of renewable energy from two solar farms in Wexford, aligning with the bank’s strategy to achieve net-zero emissions across Scope 1 and 2 by 2030.
AIB’s commitment to in-person banking and customer service
Geraldine Casey, AIB's Managing Director of Retail Banking, emphasized the importance of both digital and in-person banking services. While the majority of customers manage their finances digitally, Casey noted that face-to-face interactions remain crucial, particularly for major financial decisions. “Our branches will be places where all our customers feel comfortable discussing their finances in a welcoming environment,” she said.
Future investments in AIB’s branch betwork
This €40 million investment reaffirms AIB’s commitment to local communities and sustainable business practices, with the bank planning additional investments in its branch network in the future.
