SWINZ: Award-winning insurtech giving insurance 'back to the people'

Didier Muréna is the co-founder of SWINZ. He won silver at the Qorus Innovation in Insurance Awards 2024 in the insurtech category. He tells us more about SWINZ, a one-click subscription-based all-in-one insurance policy for the new generation of consumers (read the full case study), and he shares with us his joy at being awarded.

Can you introduce yourself and tell us more about your role at SWINZ?

Passionate about insurance, I have held several positions in transformative and executive roles at various insurers for the last 20 years. I truly believe in the societal role the insurance sector can play, creating real consumer value by simplifying the industry. Led by this core belief, we created SWINZ, the all-in-one insurance. Being CEO in a startup is often like being a ‘Swiss knife’ for my fellow team members: from solution design to product management, regulatory, finance and sales, you must be able to cover all these.

What made you most proud of the ‘All-In-One Spotify insurance’ project? What was your greatest achievement in making it happen?

We are proud to give insurance back to the people. We have succeeded in breaking the traditional insurance barriers in Belgium. Having different lines of business in one single policy, working without pricing segmentation and being the first truly phygital solution on the Belgian market are a few of the things we are all very proud of!

What is the most important thing you would tell someone considering embarking on a similar project?

The true story: Funding, funding, funding... Today, even if you have the most solid partners and you receive a lot of recognition for the work you have achieved, investors will not be interested in your project as long as you don’t run 1 million ARR. In other words, in today’s world, managing a startup is a continuous fight for survival. This being said, we have convinced a lot of insurers to change their ways of doing things. Consumer expectations are changing and the insurance market should tailor to these.

What's coming next for the ‘All-In-One Spotify insurance’ project?

We have two major milestones in the pipeline. First, if all goes well, we will close a funding round in the coming months. Second, we are also soon expanding our SWINZ offering with new optional covers. In the near future, we also want to develop an offering specific for homeowners, as well as a similar solution for freelancers and SMEs. We are active on many insurance projects besides SWINZ. We are also, for example, developing a white-labeled solution for brokers and mobility players. Always with the same goal in mind: simplifying the insurance sector for the end consumer.

What would you say to companies that might consider entering the 2025 Insurance Innovation Awards?

Don’t hesitate, even for a second! It is a great opportunity to be involved in a movement that is truly transforming the insurance industry. Connect with industry leaders and be inspired by peers developing other brilliant ideas. Don’t miss the chance!

What does this award mean to you and your innovation team?

This award is an immense recognition of the journey we went through with the entire team, our partners and our ecosystem. It is a testament to our vision to transform the insurance industry for the end consumer. We are proud of the Qorus award!
