Olivier Régent, Chief Data Officer of BNP Paribas, talks about his company and its data analytics strategy.
What is your role and the scope of your responsibilities within the company? Are you responsible for all data analytics initiatives within the company and who are your internal customers? (Divisional, Business Units, Groups/functions such as IT, ESG, Legal, Marketing, Finance, Risk, etc.)
The role of Chief Data Officer at BNP Paribas Commercial Banking in France (Banque Commerciale En France - BCEF), is to lead data strategy and governance for the business. This responsibility is clearly articulated with the Group data strategy: Group directives, in terms of technologies and infrastructure deployed, have to be implemented within the business, whilst at the same time, the local needs of the business have to be clearly defined, shared with Group teams, and provide constitutive solutions. The Group Chief Data Officer and the whole community of CDOs work in a collegiate manner, fostering Group initiatives into local applications.
Moreover, as an executive committee member of BCEF, the CDO is also responsible for the promotion of appropriate handling of data across all stakeholders including IT, ESG, Marketing Finance, Risk, Compliance, HR etc. The range of use cases includes transactional data usage, operational data usage, Business Intelligence, analytics and AI, among others.
Within BCEF, we have strong ambitions around data: it is a key lever to improve the customer experience and our operational efficiency, as well as to develop new activities. As a result, two centers of expertise have been created to fully benefit from internal data competencies: a ‘data strategy and governance’ center, and an AI center. These dedicated resources work hand-in-hand with business teams, on concrete use-cases.
