Neobanks and the next step: Revolut

08/07/2021Interview
Alan Chang, SVP Revolut, talks about how the world’s biggest neobank is on a mission to create a global superapp based on security, simplicity, and transparency.

The demographics of neobank users are often surprising; it is not only young people who are signing up, but also older age brackets. - -- What is the standard profile of your target customer? What has been key to your customer acquisition success?

We want to be the financial services provider for everyone - to help customers of all ages and backgrounds in managing all aspects of their financial life. While our early adopters skewed towards the 18 - 35 age bracket and more metropolitan than rural, that's broadening quickly as we grow. We now have more than 15 million customers globally with our biggest customer bases in the UK (>3.5m) and over 1m in each of Ireland, Poland, Romania, France and the Iberian Peninsula.

While the largest cohorts of customers are between 18 - 34 and 35 - 49, we have hundreds of thousands of junior accounts held by 7 - 17-year olds and around 2.5 million customers over 50, all the way up to people in their nineties. We started as a card predominantly chosen by customers who wanted multi-currency accounts that gave them convenient and low-cost access to foreign currency but now we offer more and more tools for all your daily financial needs, from budgeting, to open banking, bill-splitting, instant payment notifications and rewards to wealth management tools like access to crypto and spending & budgeting analytics.
